This is the highly anticipated follow-up to the best-selling title Martial Arts Around the World. Like the first volume in the series, Martial Arts Around the World, Volume 2, explores the martial techniques and philosophies developed over the span of history by different cultures around the globe. This time, we take you to Africa, Europe, Asia and South America to reveal the exotic and lethal arts each of these continents has produced. And as an added bonus, we focus especially on those martial arts that have proven their effectiveness through no-hold-barred combat.
In nearly every region of the world, a stylistic system of fighting and training has evolved. The story of the human race is a story of survival, and whenever there has been oppression or war, human ingenuity has refined unarmed combat into a science.
Naturally, we can only present a fraction of the world's fighting arts. There are many other styles worthy of being highlighted, from Russian sambo to Burmese bando; however, we have succeeded in obtaining the cooperation of practitioners of a wide cross section of the major fighting principles of numerous nations across the globe.
What we would like all readers to realize is that these comparisons are only photographic representations of martial strate-gies. All arts are based on training foundations, and need the necessary attributes such as timing, speed, and power to make them effective. Photographs freeze time, so they cannot represent the speed with which these techniques were performed.
Nevertheless, this format presents an unprecedented look at cultural, genetic and geographic influences which have resulted in a martial art. The only conclusion we can reach is there is no one art which is superior to all others. There are only superior practitioners.
