The Martial Arts Description

This is an introduction to the origins, philosophy and practice of the world's martial arts. This book provides a chapter-by-chapter tour of the many varieties of martial arts, such as aikido, iai-do, jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, kendo, kung fu, kyudo, naginata, ninjutsu, sumo, taekwon-do and Thai boxing, discussing how and why these arts developed, their ways and laws, founding myths and heroes, and the culture that created them. A glossary of martial arts terminology and an illustrated section on martial arts weaponry are also included.

'Inside the Cover' of The Martial Arts

MARTIAL ARTS provides a thorough analysis of four of the fighting arts in all their physical and psychological aspects. A history of each art is given, followed by a step-by-step guide to exercises and techniques illustrated in a series of full-colour photos graphs. The kata of Karate do and the forms of its forerunner, Kung fu, are dis cussed and displayed in detail, the patterns which form the basis of the formidable kicking characteristic of Korean Taek-wondo are explained. Perhaps for the first time in print the methods of a far less widespread art are presented: the Ninjutsu art of Japan, which, because of its extraordinary beginnings 800 years ago, follows a unique path in the tradition of martial art, eschewing the rigid application of form. MARTIAL ArTS is at once an intriguing insight for the general reader into a subject often misunderstood, and for the martial art student of lasting practical value for its clarity and step-by-step visual content.

Peter Lewis has been involved with martial arts for more than 25 years. He has written several books on the subject, including "The Way of Martial Arts' and 'Martial Art of the Orient'. Having become a Black Belt in Wado-ryu Karate he switched to Kung fu and more recently has within that tradition become an exponent of Tai Chi Chuan (or 'Grand Ultimate Fist'). He is Consultant Editor of Fighters magazine.

Shipping The Martial Arts

We have a few different options for posting your items at Enso Martial Arts Shop. Prices vary depending on the overall order, weight, size etc. The checkout page will automatically workout the possible options for you.
We can send your item(s) in the following ways:
Courier Tracked - Order before 1pm, we can pack and post the same day to be with you the next working day, this is not a weekend service. It is fully tracked and we will send you the tracking number when we process your order.
Evri - In our experience an extremely slow service, we cannot guarantee it will arrive. It isn't an option on the website for good reason, so if you want this pitiful service and your parcel thrown into a random hedge near your house, if you're lucky, just to save about £2 then simply call us on 0117 942 5832 and we can process your order over the phone.
Fedex Worldwide - For anywhere outside the UK, we can post the same day but delivery times are dependent on the destination. Approximate delivery times are as follows:
  • Europe: 2-3 working days
  • USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand: 3-4 working days
  • All other destinations: 4-7 working days.
