Karate is an unusual activity in that the experts are not in full agreement upon its aims. Self-defence or sport?Exercise or philosophy?
The majority of its devotees are attracted by the self-defence movements upon which it is based, and there can be no doubt that Karate is the most effective form of self-defence.
Karate is, however, far more than just this. It is an exercise in physical and mental balance, and one of the toughest forms of physical training in existence. It is also claimed that it moulds the personality of its exponents.
To make any form of self-defence effective only requires a comparatively small number of movements and practice until they become instinctive. Add to these movements a series of counter-attacks, and you have a crude and basic form of Karate crude but effective. However, a display of this form of self-defence and counter-attack would horrify the genuine Karateman.
What, then, is Karate? Basically, it is a series of self-defence and counter-attack tactics based on traditional movements.
These are run into formal series, called "Katas" in Japanese, and they are taught and practised without change year after year. At one time, there were hundreds of Karate Schools in Japan, each with its own Katas; but at the present time they have been reduced to just a few associations, each teaching its own system to its own affiliated clubs. The system of each school or association has its own merits and failings, and 1 think that the unswerving belief in the perfection of the systems of one's own school tends to delay progress. There is a tendency to retain movements and postures because they are traditional to the school, rather than because they are effective.
