Science of Stretching Description
"Science of Stretching" explains the scientific basis of stretching so that readers can apply stretching principles and techniques. Through illustrations, diagrams, charts, and figures, author Michael Alter clearly explains the physiology, neurophysiology, mechanics, and even the psychology of stretching. He then presents practical guidelines for developing a flexibility programme, including over 200 stretching exercises and warm-up drills.
'On the Back' of Science of Stretching
As a former gymnast, coach, and nationally certified men's gymnastics judge, Michael J. Alter knows the importance of stretching. In Science of Stretching, he presents a survey of current knowledge on flexibility, including a discussion of functional anatomy, methods of stretching, and causes of injury. Alter also offers complete guidelines for coaches, trainers, physical education instructors, and physical therapists seeking to develop and implement stretching and flexibility programs.
Michael J. Alter earned his MS in health education from Florida International University at Miami in 1976. He taught physical education and coached gymnastics for several years in the Florida schools, where he is still a high school teacher. In his leisure time Michael enjoys listening to classical music, working out with weights, bicycling, and studying sports medicine.
