When the 'Ultimate Fighting Championship' staged its first Cage Fighting event in November 1993 many people criticised the event for its brutality - two men engaged in No-Holds-Barred fighting with no rules, gloves, weight divisions and time limits - but what the UFC did is spark a revolution in the Combat Sports World by becoming a worldwide phenomenon. In the US Cage Fighting has now topped Boxing as the top Combat Sport spectate, and in the UK the UFC is outselling events headlined by stars such as Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton and Joe Calazage. UFC 75
held at the 02 Arena in London on September 2007 became the most watched MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) show anywhere. With that in mind the sport has now been embraced by the media and government bodies, endorsing this artistic form of fighting and the sporting prowess of the gladiatorial warriors that take part. Cage fighting has created super stars out of fighters such as Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Ken and Frank Shamrock and the legendary Royce Gracie who have gained the respect that in the past was only reserved for Heavy-weight Boxers.
