Competition karate is increasing in popularity. It now attracts a much wider range of participants than previously. Once exclusive to men; women and children now successfully train and compete. With the arrival of weight and grading categories a wide range of participation can take place giving many the opportunity to become winners. We have written this book with two aims in mind. First, it is a guide to competition fitness, strategy and techniques. We assume a basic knowledge of karate and have used three or four stage illustrations of each manoeuvre. The attacks and defences illustrated are simple in their execution laying stress on reading your opponent's reactions and using feinting or dummy attacks to draw his guard. These have proved successful in our experience up to world class competition.Second the book emphasises the need for all keen sports participants today to recognise that injuries can occur. Your training will be more enjoyable and competition more successful if you can prevent injury. To do this you must recognise situations and take avoiding action. No matter how careful you are it is inevitable, because of the very nature of the game, that an injury will occur at some time. Your action in such a situation is vital. Active, safe and early management will prevent late problems and allow a quicker return to sport. Success in karate, like most sport, depends on dedicated, well directed training. This can only be achieved by avoiding long lay-off periods through injury.
