So revolutionary were the principles Morihei Uyeshiba propounded that there was an insistent public demand for a book explaining the new art
The originator and revered founder of AIKIDO is Morihei Uyeshiba. So revolutionary were the principles he propounded that there was an insistent public demand for a book explaining the new art, and there were attempts to satisfy this demand by pamphleteers who had at best only a shallow knowledge of the subject. It was not until permission was granted by the founder to his son, Kisshomaru Uyeshiba, to publish "AIKIDO" that the demand was adequately met in August 1957. The author of this book is the director of the general headquarters arena of AIKIDO, at 102 Wakamatsu-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
Because the book contains a record of Professor Uyeshiba's own experiences in developing AIKIDO as well as an exposition of the ideals and practical application of the art and a detailed explanation of every hold, "AIKIDO" was warmly received by all practitioners of the art.
Now that AIKIDO has spread from Japan to America, France, Italy, Hawaii and other parts of the earth, the fact that this book is published only in Japanese and has not yet been translated into English to make the knowledge of AIKIDO available to a larger public is one cause for dissatisfaction.
It must be acknowledged that the thought processes of the Japanese and the sentence structure of the Japanese language make translation a difficult task, and it is equally difficult to présent the spiritual overtones and undertones of AIKIDO so that non-Japanese may hear them clearly.
I am making this attempt to introduce AIKIDO in English only because I have learned from the trips I made to Hawaii and the United States mainland about conditions that exist there and know from teaching several thousand students that there is among them an ardent desire to have a book of this kind to study.
Professor Uyeshiba has given me his kind permission to proceed and I offer
"AIKIDO" in the hope that it will be a good companion to fellow practitioners and a guide to those who wish to pursue the study of this art.
