The Kung Fu Pudao has a slightly gruesome purpose, it is widely believed to cut at the legs of horses in battlefields. Because of this, it is also known as the horse cutting knife. It is one of the Chinese Kung Fu long weapons and is now used by many styles in China including Wushu, Shaolin Temple Kung Fu and many more. It is said to have been traditionally a Chinese broadsword bade with a long handle. However, over the years, the deisgn has changed a bit and now they are slightly different, with a slightly shorter and wider blade and a much longer staff. Kung Fu Pudao are also distinctive as Pudao have a ring or loop on the other end, mkaing them different from Guan Dao which have a spike.
Flexible weapons can get a little bit of criticism in the Kung Fu world, as they are not like battle ready weapons, however the purpose of flexible weapons is not for fighting but for demonstrating the moves and possibilities available with such a weapons. They are designed to look great in demonstrations and competitions. Being so light allows them to be moved very quickly in th air and allows the practitioners to be super precise with his / her movements.
The blade is made from a flexible sprung steel and can bend 180 degrees. This makes a great whipping sound when thrusted out hard. Perfect for making forms more dramatic. Attached to this is a wooden staff with a metal loop on the other end. These are reported to have been originally used for disarming swords or other weapons. A lightweight, long weapon with fantastic forms that look great and are fun to do. Happy training.
“This is not a small weapon, it’s a bit of a slog getting it around the place. The forms are great and have some fantastic moves to learn. Have fun with this.”
