Wind and Fire Wheels are a rare weapon usually associated with Bagua Zhang and TaijiQuan. A pair used for slashing, stabbing and disarming an opponent’s weapon
Wing and Fire Wheels are a weapon mainly associated with Bagua Zhang and TaijiQuan but you will see them in some traditional styles of Kung Fu too like Paying Mantis, Choi Li Fut and even used at the Shaolin Temple. Normally though they are known as being a Ba Gua Zhang weapon. It's hard to find historical information on these Wind and Fire Wheels but it is generally considered they evolved from either Indian Chakram or the Chinese Deer Horn Knives, both have a seemingly obvious evolution into the Wind and Fire Wheels. A very strange looking weapon, they were most likely used by the bodyguards for Chinese Money caravans working all across China, for their imposing looks.
Comparatively, they would have been used for jabbing, slashing, striking, parrying, hooking, locking and disarming opponents. The hand would have been protected by the crescent moon guard. Designs of these vary massively, some people say there are up to 400 different varieties. The main structure is a metal ring with a grip on. Some have nothing, some have metal flames coming out of them and these one’s for sale at Enso Martial Arts Shop have seven single flame type spikes. Where the grip is has a semi circle guard to protect the hand.
Made from a single piece of sheet metal with a material wrap for the handle. They are made in this way as it helps keep the costs down for this very complicated and intricate weapon. A combat ready weapon would cost many many times more. Built this way, it means Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Ba Gua practitioners alike get to train with this rare and fascinating weapon.
“There are very few people around who teach these at all. You may have to spend some time on YouTube teaching yourself or travelling to weekend seminars to really get to grips with this weapon.”
