Chinese kung fu is a general term. There are in fact numerous styles of Chinese kung fu. Even in the same particular style, it can be divided into different branches.
During my recent visit to Europe, people I met in the cities raised the same question to me - "What is kung fu?"
The correct name for kung fu is in fact "Wu-Shu", which means MARTIAL-ART. Kung fu is the colloquial term employed by the Chinese people to mean
"techniques". Wu-Shu is of course a kind of techniques, and therefore people fall into the habit of calling it "Kung Fu"!
In the United States of America, Chinese kung fu has already been taught to kung fu enthusiasts. Nowadays, many people in U.S.A. know that kung fu is only a general term for the art of self-defense or fighting, which in fact includes different systems or styles, known as "Moon-Pai" in Chinese.
However, a greater part of citizens in Europe still do not know what "kung fu" means.
In my recent tour to Europe, I met quite a number of self-proclaimed European kung fu "Sifus". These so-called kung fu Sifus are in fact usurping the title of kung fu masters — they are merely "hanging up a goat's head while selling the dog's meat", as the Chinese saying goes. Some of them have but acquired some skills of Karate or Taekwondo, while the rest of them have perhaps read through a few so-called specialized martial-art books (which can in fact hardly be regarded as specialized), or have gone through some training. Having done so, they dare setting up gymnasiums, admitting students, and conferring themselves with titles such as "7th Dan kung fu specialists"
', or "6th Dan Black Sash". Some even go to the extreme of claiming to be
"Founders" of such and such a Style! (Unfortunely the grading system of Chinese kung fu is completely different from the Japanese grading system; we have NO belt for conferring the degrees, and we NEVER use any sash for this kind of purpose! In fact most of the kung fu styles up to now have NO grading system.)
