One of the greatest sages of history was a man named Lao-tzu, who was born in China in the year 604 B.C. He is regarded as the founder of the system of religion known as Taoism. His writings have been preserved in a small volume of poetry entitled Tao-Teh-King, which translated means "The Way and its Power." It was adopted as a canon in China in the year 666 A.D. It has endured through the centuries and has been translated into many languages.
This version of the Tao-Teh-King was first published in
1905. Its translator, G. Spurgeon Medhurst, spent twenty years in China as a missionary and found great inspiration in the Tao-Teh-King. He was both a scholar of the Chinese language and a student of comparative religion, and he added his own helpful commentary and notes. Because of the interest in Chinese culture, this book is now made available as part of the Quest Book series.
