Wooden Red Oak Tanto are a must for many Japanese Martial Arts. Actually quite rare these days and hard to find in the UK. Used for solo form practice, partner work, pressure testing and practicing techniques they are an essential addition to most people training kit bag. The most use however will be when practicing street style knife defences. Picked up by many traditional Japanese Martial Arts as well as modern Self defence systems.
They mimic a ‘real’ knife so you can practice knife defences and forms in relative safety while maintaining a traditional feel. Long ago, the Japanese discovered that constantly training with sharp weapons wasn’t always a good idea. Hence the wooden white oak tanto was born, along with the bokken and shoto. This means you can still get hit and realise that it's a good idea to not get in the way of the knife but without getting stabbed, cut or dead. Whereas, Bo Staff and Jo Staff became weapons in their own right, wooden swords including the white oak tanto have always been reserved for practice.
For the majority of popel buying these they will already have a few wooden weapons and would have gone for white oak. This helps you complete the set, ratehr than having mismatched colours of your wooden weapons. Made from White Oak which is extremely tough and hard wearing and measuring 28cm, which tends to be the standard length for Tanto and self defence training knives these days.
“There is honestly nothing between these and the red oak tanto, it's purely based on colour and about getting a matching set of wooden weapons. They are nice looking though”
