Aikido is a martial art developed in Japan by Master Morihei Uyeshiba. It is only in recent years - since World War II - that it has spread outside Japan. At first its popularity in the West was due mainly to its value as an effective system of self-defence. However, all those who have reached a certain level in this Art readily agree with the view of the Founder himself, that the self-defence aspect of Aikido is merely a by-product, a low rung in one's apprentice-ship; and that its true value lies in its spiritual significance as a discipline and a means of self-realisation.
Roughly translated Ai-ki-do means "The Way of Unification with Universal Energy". More specifically, it is a Martial Art developed in Japan by Master Morihei Ueshiba. Within the framework of the Martial Arts, its characteristic is that it does not aim to destroy the opponent but to create such a harmony in the environment that ultimately the opponent is deprived of his aggressiveness. Aikido is therefore not only a physical discipline but a spiritual discipline as well. As a self-defense technique its elegant and effortless motions can be practiced at any age and (if properly performed) can be used against an unarmed opponent, as well as against one armed with a staff, spear, sword or knife, and even several opponents attacking simultaneously. Before 1945 Aikido was "reserved" by the elite Japanese nobility and military establishment. To-day it has a large and growing following not only in the Orient but all over the world. Part I describes some fundamental concepts of the Art. Part Il is devoted to the most important Aikido techniques.
