Kata are techniques executed in a set sequence. Unknown in Western fighting arts, they were the essence of practice in Okinawa and China and became the fundamental training method when karate-do was introduced to Japan proper by Master Gichin Funakoshi. The kata illustrated and fully described in this volume are Jitte, Hange-tsu and Empi. Using the arms as one might use a stick is a special feature of Jitte, as it is of karate-do, and performed properly it is com-manding, showing dignity and composure. In Hangetsu, literally "half moon," circular movements of hands and feet are coordinated with
breathing, so that the karateka is always ready to make the right move. At the core of Empi, which is evocative of the easy, agile movements of the swallow, are continuous techniques.
