- THIS IS A SECOND HAND BOOK -
Here at last is a Tai Chi manual that is more than just a step-by-step description of movements it also presents a methodical way for Westerners to appreciate and master the subtleties of the art. In the East, Tai Chi students are expected to watch and imitate the teacher without benefit of verbal explanations. Paul Crompton believes that this approach does not work with Westerners, who want and need more specific guidance. This he provides by using anec-dotes, personal experiences, and his own thoughts and feelings to enhance the reader's understanding. He answers the questions most asked by students and gives tips on relaxa-tion, breathing, alignment, balance, and posture. Excellent photographs accompany his explanation of the complete Long Form (Yang style) as well as the Push Hands exercise that is basic to Tai Chi training. To round out the picture, the author includes chapters on the history of Tai Chi, its health benefits and self-defense applications, and its relationship to other arts and disciplines of the East. Crompton's straightforward, personal approach and suggestions will be welcomed by both new and experienced practitioners.
Paul Crompton teaches Tai Chi in England. He is the author of five books on the martial arts and the editor of the British magazine Karate and Oriental Arts.
