Two Tachi-type ceremonial swords with the finest quality fittings and lacquer. Rosewood stand is inlaid with silver wire. Bottom left: Sword guards tsubas fashioned from thick pieces of iron as these were meant for wartime use. Tsubas are decorated with inlays of precious metals, especially gold. Shown with the tsubas are utility knives kozuka a hair arranger kogai and little figures menuki which are set under the hilt wrapping to cause bulges along the hilt for a better grip. Bottom right: Sword hilts. Top piece displays over 100 tiny solid gold family crests of the Tokugawa family. Middle sword has manta ray skin stretched over handle and ornamented. Bottom sword's pommel depicts Phoenix bird, symbol of the Empress. This indicated sword was carried by general in charge of guarding women's quarters in the palace.
