The Double Melon Hammers are one of the rarer weapons to be demonstrated in China and in the West. For wielding and smashing techniques in Shaolin and Kung Fu
Double Melon Hammers are traditionally a wielding weapon mostly used as in a pair. These days and for this set, the hammer part is hollow making it easier to perform forms and techniques. I can’t imagine what a solid iron or bronze hammer head would be like to train with. Too heavy for everyday use. Double melon hammers come in a variety of styles, you can get these 8 sided balls, you get hexagonal style hammer heads, much more square looking and others too. They do vary quite a bit. These particular double melon hammers are made very well and are much better than the standard melon hammers you often get.
Designed as a weapon for smashing, they could have been used in a battle style fight or even a one to one self protection or armed protection services. Seeing as they would have been so heavy, the wielder would have had to be very strong and pretty big. Even a glancing blow would cause some damage. Nowadays you see them mainly being used in forms for demonstrations an competitions, where the moves used can be performed.
They shaft is made from metal rather than wood, making them much more durable. the the fitting between the shaft and the head are a faux bronze. Really nice quality and very usable for training.
“These actually quite light as you’d expect, they are a Wushu weapon so designed for forms not combat, they will dent easily.”
